Developmental norms

How your child plays, learns, speaks, acts, and moves offers important clues about your child’s development. Developmental milestones are things most children can do by a certain age.  It can be difficult for parents to recognize signs of delayed or atypical sensory development during the first few years of life; however, research indicates that early identification and intervention can change a child's developmental path and improve outcomes for children and their families.  Parents are often told not to worry and that their child will develop at their own pace.  While this is certainly true in some cases, it is not the case for most children.  When left untreated, delays in development often lead to significant learning challenges later in the school age years.

If you would like to know more about developmental expectations for your child's age, we have developmental checklists for children age 2 months through 5 years that can be downloaded below.  These checklists include ideas on how to support development at home and when to consult with your doctor or specialist.
